Watching Va Sentiero’s documentary on their first several months of hiking and then following it up by exploring their website made for a welcome change of pace (no pun intended) from the past week. I’m mainly familiar with two other long distance trails—the GR34 (“le Sentier des Douaniers”) in Brittany, France which is 1700 km long and traces the coastline of the entire Breton peninsula and the Appalachian Trail in the US which follows the Appalachian mountains from Georgia to Maine for 3500 km. Having had the privilege of living near both, there is something to be said for seeing a landscape on foot. We have friends who thru-hiked the AT several years ago. It took them from March to October to walk the entire way and the experience is still changing them. I’d like to hear from the Va sentiero team months after they’re finished their physical journey. What will be their take away when the immediate goal of hiking the whole trail is over? How will the experience change them?
