Utopia is something that has not yet occurred but it does not necessarily mean that it should not or cannot be realized. It is the spice of life, it gives meaning to daily commitment, creates movement, gives a strong reason to move from "I" to "we". Any conquest that marked the path of humanity, in every field, starting from the scientific one, was an illusion, an intuition, until the day before it became reality. Today we have not yet been able to eradicate cancer, but this does not lead us to affirm the futility of research and investment in this field. And no one dismisses the fight against cancer as a "utopia" to be abandoned. This, for me, also applies to war, which is the cancer of humanity. War, like cancer, still exists, and it should be a shared commitment, at all levels. Everyone, for what they can, must seek the solution, the "antidote" to eradicate it. Violence is not the right medicine: it does not cure the disease, it kills the patient. "We are the only animal species that makes war": it is not a statement of the present day, it was said by Erasmus of Rotterdam, who already 500 years ago dismantled the concept of "just" war. In a world like today's, where conflicts are continually multiplying and expanding, where the available weapons could destroy the planet, is it reasonable or not to ask the question of how to get out of it? I think it is the most reasonable thing. Abolishing warfare is a far more reasonable prospect than continuing to ignore it and continue with this devastating practice. The fact that bombs and weapons have marked our past, marked in blood, does not mean that they must be an obligatory part of our future. War is not inscribed in the destiny of humanity!
Gino Strada, from this interview.
In the First World War, 15% of the dead were civilians, in the Second World War, the percentage of non-military casualties rises to 60% and will not stop in the following years. Today, 90% of those killed in conflicts are not military, wars mainly kill civilians, a third of which are children. For this reason, in 1994, Gino Strada, Teresa Sarti and others founded Emergency, to bring medical and surgical treatments to war areas around the world.
Gino Strada died last Friday at the age of 73, but his example and his ideas will continue to inspire those who do not allow themselves to be overcome by cynicism and hypocrisy. To find out about him, go to the Emergency website, watch his lecture on war and read his last article.
